Below is a selection of questions I am asked quite frequently. If you have a burning question that you don't find below and you think others would want to know as well, then please contact me.
How did I become a biologist and TV Host?
I grew up most of my childhood life on a farm in Ohio and spent much of my time running the fields, forests and streams around our house. I cannot remember a time when I wasn't into animals and knew when I was 7 that I wanted to be a biologist. After graduating high school at 17, I joined the military to help pay my way to college and traveled to Central America where I fell in love with the rainforest. Inspired to press on with my passion, I immersed myself in everything biology and things have fallen into place over the years that have allowed me to continue to do what I love.
Are you afraid of anything?
That is a fair question. I am not sure I am afraid of a particular species, but I respect them all! There are situations that I get a little anxious about like being in tight area with a large crocodile or venomous snake like a King Cobra. Walking through the jungle at night has taken me into some hair raising experiences that I was lucky to come out of unscathed.
Do you do any of the cinematography on the show?
Actually, yes. I have done some filming for the show and for a documentary or two, but I am by no means a pro!
What is your favorite place?
A tough one again! There are so many wild places that I love like the rainforests of Sumatra, Borneo, the Amazon and Africa is a mind blowing experience like no other. No matter where I am, I seem to be drawn to wild places...where I feel at peace.
What is your favorite animal?
That is a REALLY HARD question. It is very difficult to choose just one favorite because I am enamored by sooo many of nature's creatures. Species with strange adaptations are a favorite and venom ranks pretty high on the list. Lions, leopards, pangolin, cobras, crocodiles, Komodo Dragons, hyena, rhinoceros, frog fish...this list could go on forever...
What are your least favorite animals?
Bipedal primates with no regard for the planet or its wild creatures.
Have you ever been attacked by an animal in the wild?
Indeed, I have! I was bitten by a Fer-de-Lance viper in the Amazon Basin that could have cost me my life. I have also been mobbed by baboons, harassed by monkeys, charged by elephants, stalked by crocodiles, stung by bullet ants, sniffed through my tent by lions, hyenas and hippos, and worst of all...given blood to tens of thousands of mosquitoes.
How many countries have you been to?
Lots, but NOT ENOUGH!!!! I am still missing some biggies like China, the Antarctic & Arctic, Australia, Mongolia and Tibet. All high on my list.
What's next for you?
I hope to continue educating people about the wildlife and wild places on this planet. I can't think of anything I enjoy doing more than that.
